Eyeliner Tattoo

Eyeliner tattooing, or permanent eyeliner, is a cosmetic procedure that enhances the beauty and shape of the eyes with a permanent tattoo. This procedure is designed to last 3–5 years and potentially a lifetime with regular touch-ups.

This guide covers everything you need to know about eyeliner tattoos. We will go over the different styles, the procedure details, and what you can expect after the procedure. If you've been on the fence about this procedure, this guide is for you!

What Is a Permanent Eyeliner Tattoo?

A permanent eyeliner tattoo is a cosmetic procedure that uses pigments specially designed for this treatment to create a permanent tattoo on the skin around the eyeline. This tattoo mimics the look of traditional eyeliner, giving you a long-lasting and effortless everyday eye makeup look.

Permanent eyeliner tattoo eliminates the daily hassle of applying eyeliner, making it a perfect solution for those with busy lifestyles, shaky hands, or vision problems that make applying makeup a challenge. It’s also a great complement to eyelash extensions, giving your eyes a full, captivating look without the worry of smudging or wearing off.

It's also a great option if you have allergic reactions to conventional eye makeup. Tattoo eyeliner offers a safe alternative, giving you the freedom to enjoy beautiful, hassle-free eye makeup every day.

The Different Styles of Permanent Eyeliner

There are several different styles of permanent eyeliner tattoos to choose from, each providing a different look and level of intensity.

  • Natural/lash line enhancement: This style involves creating a thin, subtle line along the lash line, giving your eyes a natural and defined look.

  • Classic: Also known as traditional eyeliner, this style creates a slightly thicker line compared to natural eyeliner. It is perfect for those who want a more noticeable and defined look.

  • Winged: This style involves creating a line that extends beyond the outer corner of the lash line, giving you a winged or cat-eye effect. It can be as subtle or dramatic as you desire.

*Each style can be done in your choice of color including black, black brown, brown, charcoal, navy blue or dark green, etc.

Benefits of Eyeliner Tattoo

  • Long-lasting: Unlike traditional makeup, eyeliner tattoos last for several years with regular touch-ups.

  • Hassle-free: With permanent eyeliner, you can wake up every day with perfectly defined eyes without having to spend time applying makeup.

  • Saves money: While the initial cost of an eyeliner tattoo may seem expensive, it can actually save you money in the long run. You won't have to constantly purchase new eyeliners or other eye makeup products.

  • Safe for sensitive skin: Permanent eyeliner is a safe alternative if you have sensitive skin or allergies to traditional eye makeup products.

  • Customizable: With different styles and colors to choose from, you can customize your eyeliner tattoo to suit your personal style and preferences. We prefer to focus on natural enhancements, rather than dramatic looks, so that you are happy with your tattoo even when styles and trends or even your preferences change over the years.

Choosing a Permanent Makeup Artist

When considering getting an eyeliner tattoo, it's crucial to do your research and choose a reputable permanent makeup artist. Here are some things to consider when choosing an artist:

  • Experience: Look for an artist with several years of experience in performing eyeliner tattoos. Check their portfolio and read reviews from previous clients to ensure they have a good track record.

  • Certifications and Training: Make sure the artist has received proper training and holds relevant certifications from reputable organizations.

  • Cleanliness: The artist's workspace should be clean and sanitary. Make sure they use sterile equipment and follow proper hygiene practices.

  • Consultation: A good permanent makeup artist will offer a consultation before the procedure to discuss your desired look, answer any questions you may have, and provide recommendations based on your skin type and eye shape.

How to Prepare for Eyeliner Tattoo Procedure

Before getting an eyeliner tattoo, there are a few things you should do to prepare for the procedure:

  • Avoid caffeine and alcohol: Avoid consuming caffeine or alcohol 24 hours before your appointment. This can help reduce any bleeding or swelling during the procedure.

  • Avoid eye makeup: On the day of your appointment, come with a clean face and do not wear any eye makeup.

  • Eyelash extensions: Eyelash extensions should be removed at least 24 hours prior to your eyeliner procedure as this gives your technician a clear view of the lash line. In addition, the cleaning/wiping of the area may rip out lash extensions. Eyelash extensions can be put back on 2 weeks after, but for those receiving a touch-up, we recommend waiting until 2 weeks after the touch-up is complete to put your eyelash extensions back on.

  • Lash growth serum: Eyelash growth serums such as Latisse or Adoreyes MUST be discontinued 4 weeks prior to the eyeliner tattoo procedure. Lash serums may be resumed 2 weeks post procedure.

  • Remove contact lenses:  If you wear contact lenses, make sure to remove them before the procedure. Your technician will be pulling on your eyelids and this can make your contact pop out or move around in your eye.

  • Anxiety medication: If you are anxious about the procedure, it is okay to take antianxiety medication. The medication should be prescribed and approved by your doctor. If you choose to take medication, make sure you have someone arranged to take you home after the procedure.

Eyeliner Tattoo Procedure

The procedure typically takes about 2–3 hours to complete depending on how complex you would like your eyeliner design. Here is what you can expect during the procedure:

  1. Consultation: Before the procedure, you will have a consultation with your permanent makeup artist to discuss your desired look and determine the best style for you.

  2. Preparation: The treatment area is cleaned with an antiseptic that is non-irritating to the eye. Photos are taken at this time.

  3. Numbing: The numbing cream is applied, and the eyelid is quickly and gently scratched with the tattoo needle. The needle feels a bit irritating, but not painful. Scratching the skin allows the numbing to work faster.  The numbing will sit on for about 10 minutes. Since the eyelids are so thin and vascular, the numbing takes effect quite quickly. Once the numbing takes effect, the area will be cleansed again.

  4. Eyeliner shape: Your artist will draw the desired eyeliner look on the eyelid for your approval. When you are happy with the shape, the tattooing process will begin.

  5. Top eyeliner procedure: The eyes will remain closed. Your technician will have a strong, but comfortable grip stretching the eyelid to ensure the needle guides smoothly. This will also keep the eyelid from fluttering open during the procedure. It is possible for some of the products to get into the eye. However, the products are specifically designed for this procedure, and are considered safe if they were to run into the eye. We have eyewashes on hand should you need your eyes flushed at any point during the procedure.

  6. Bottom eyeliner procedure: Your technician will still have a nice tight grip to stretch the skin. However, because of the location, your eyelid might allow some light to seep in. Some clients find this “awkward”, but most tolerate it just fine.

  7. Final approval: When the procedure is done, you will be shown the tattoo. Be open and honest with your technician at this point. If there is something you don't like, make sure you speak up! After photos are taken, the area is cleaned and a protective ointment is applied. But remember, it is common for the area to be slightly swollen so the shape may look different than what the healed result will look like so it is important not to be overly concerned about “small differences” as they may settle down as inflammation subsides.

Aftercare and Healing

As with all permanent make up, the colour will look very intense and bold for the first few days. It is not uncommon for the colour to look quite a bit lighter when the initial peeling is done, and then intensify again as the healing progresses.

It's essential to follow our aftercare instructions to ensure optimal healing and results. Here are some general aftercare tips to keep in mind:

  • Swelling: Immediately after the procedure you may have some mild swelling. It should not impair your vision, and you should be able to drive home afterward. However, if you are worried about your ability to see, it is best to arrange for someone to pick you up. Most find that the swelling they experience makes it look as if they were crying or have been suffering from allergies. Swelling will most commonly subside after 24 hours, but in rare cases, it can last up to 3 days. (some find that taking an antihistamine may help reduce swelling)

  • Bruising: Although rare, bruising can occur since the eyelid area is so vascular. Bruising, if any, usually subsides within 3–7 days.

  • Pain: The numbing takes 2 to 3 hours to wear off. Once the numbing is out, there should be no pain associated with the treatment. However, if you do feel pain, you may ice the area with a dry, clean compress.

  • Avoid getting the area wet: Keep the treated area dry for at least 24 hours after the procedure. This includes avoiding activities like swimming or hot yoga. However, you will receive shower shields in your aftercare kit to help  keep them dry in the shower.

  • Avoid touching or picking at the area: It's crucial to let the scabs and flakes fall off naturally. Picking at them can disrupt the healing process and affect the final results. Flaking typically stops around day 5.

  • Avoid wearing makeup: Avoid wearing any eye makeup, especially mascara, for at least a week after the procedure. This allows the area to heal and prevents any bacteria from entering the treated area. Once the flaking has stopped, you can resume wearing mascara.

  • Apply recommended ointment: Your technician will provide you with an ointment to apply to the treated area for a few days after the procedure. Follow their instructions carefully, and make sure to wash your hands before applying it.

  • Avoid sun exposure: It's crucial to avoid sun exposure for at least a week after the procedure. If you must be in the sun, make sure to wear sunglasses and a hat to protect the treated area.
