Why We Trained With an Optometrist: Safer Lash Extensions in Calgary

At The Beauty Block, eye health isn’t just a buzzword—it’s the backbone of everything we do. Your comfort, vision, and natural lash health are just as important to us as delivering the perfect mascara-free lash set.

That’s why we recently completed a specialized ocular hygiene lash training course in collaboration with licensed Calgary optometrists. The goal? To enhance the safety, comfort, and long-term wellness of your eyelash extension experience.

We’re now proud to offer one of Calgary’s most optometrist-informed lash protocols, combining clinical-level eye safety with our signature effortless beauty.

Beauty Block lash artists receiving in-depth ocular hygiene training from a licensed Calgary optometrist. Includes hands-on practice with artificial tears and lash-safe protocols to enhance client eye health and safety during lash extension services.

Our NEW Enhanced Lash Safety Routine

We’ve added a few simple but powerful steps to every full set and fill, all designed to support ocular health and enhance your lash results. Here’s how your next appointment is about to get even better.

Preservative-Free Eye Drops

Either before or after your lash service, we use artificial tears to gently hydrate your eyes. These drops are soothing, preservative-free, and ideal for anyone who wears contact lenses or deals with eye strain from screens or sun exposure. We can apply them for you once you're comfortably lying down, or you’re welcome to apply them yourself, whatever makes you feel most at ease.

→ Bonus: They help reduce irritation and dryness during the service, especially with extended eye closure.

Did You Know Most Calgarians Have Dry Eye?

Calgary’s dry climate is tough on your eyes—even if you don’t realize it. Many local optometrists say the majority of their patients show signs of dry eye, and lash clients are no exception. Since we see you every 2–3 weeks (compared to an annual eye exam), we make it a priority to support moisturized, comfortable eyes with every appointment. Hydrating drops are a small step with a big impact.

Hypochlorous Acid Lash Cleanse

Say hello to the hero of ocular hygiene: Hypochlorous Acid. We now apply this naturally antibacterial, antimicrobial solution before and after every service to the lash line, eyelids, and even under the eyes, where eye pads were placed.

Why it matters:

  • Kills 99% of bacteria and helps prevent pink eye

  • Gently cleanses the meibomian glands (which protect tear production)

  • Reduces inflammation, redness, and itchiness

  • Helps prevent allergic reactions to lash adhesive

  • Supports healthy retention of your eyelash extensions

Saline Rinse + Gentle Lash Bath

If you’ve got extra mascara or buildup, we’ll give you a quick lash bath using Ocusoft, an optometrist-recommended cleanser that preps your lashes without irritation.

After your lash set is complete, we use a nano mister with saline to gently hydrate and soothe the eye area, reduce any lingering fumes, and promote comfort post-treatment.

Why This Matters for Your Eye Health

Your eyes are delicate—and your eyelash technician should treat them that way. Whether you wear contact lenses, have undergone laser eye surgery, or simply want to avoid discomfort and irritation, this protocol helps keep your eyes calm, clean, and safe.

Even better? These steps support stronger natural lash health, resulting in better retention and fewer issues related to irritation or sensitivity caused by lash adhesive.

Lash Tip: Eye Exams Aren’t Just for Glasses!

Healthy lashes start with healthy eyes. If you haven’t had an eye exam in the last year, it might be time to book one—especially if you wear contact lenses, experience frequent eye strain, or plan to keep up with lash extensions regularly. Your optometrist can check for underlying issues like dry eye, blocked meibomian glands, or sensitivities that could affect lash retention and comfort.

Post-Lash Care: Your New Aftercare Routine

To help you get the most out of your lashes (and keep your eyes happy), it’s important to continue caring for your eye health at home. Here’s what we recommend:

  • Use Lashin’ Out Lash Suds only 2–3x per week to avoid over-cleansing.

  • Use Hale Derma Hypochlorous Acid spray 1–2x daily. It’s like skincare for your lash line, keeping bacteria, allergens, and irritation at bay.

  • Always dry with a clean lash brush and avoid harsh rubbing or sleeping face-first into your pillow.

🌟Pro tip: Store your lash brushes in a clean container and wash them regularly using Lashin’ Out Lash Suds to keep them fresh and bacteria-free.

FAQs About Lash Safety & Eye Health

Are there any risks with eyelash extensions?

Like any beauty treatment, eyelash extensions carry some risk—especially if hygiene isn’t prioritized. Issues like pink eye, blepharitis, or allergic reactions can occur with poor technique or dirty tools. That’s why we go the extra mile with medical-grade ocular hygiene and continued lash training.

Where can you get safe eyelash extensions in Calgary?

Right here at The Beauty Block. Our lash artists are trained in both beauty and eye safety. We've teamed up with a Calgary optometrist to create protocols that protect your vision, comfort, and lashes.

Can I get lash extensions if I wear contact lenses or have had laser eye surgery?

Our new routine is designed with contact lens wearers and post-laser eye surgery clients in mind. We reduce dryness, eliminate irritants, and support tear production for a gentle, eye-safe experience.

How do I know if my lash tech is prioritizing eye safety?

Ask about their pre-treatment and aftercare instructions! A great lash artist will talk you through their sanitation practices, use products like Hypochlorous Acid, and educate you on how to care for your lashes at home.
